📚 Yuanshen Haikua — a Qing-dynasty endgame manual
The name promises a slaughter — “Slaying Generals at the Passes” — but the board is strangely calm: the armies are nearly level, Red has one extra chariot while Black keeps the full advisor–elephant palace guard, and the old book concludes a draw. The name comes from chapter 27 of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms: Guan Yu crossing five passes and slaying six generals to return to Liu Bei. There is just one oddity: the novel says five passes, this composition says four. Why one pass is missing, nobody has ever explained — the anecdote below also tells how the Uyên Thâm Hải Khoát containing this position nearly vanished, surviving only as the hand-copied manuscript of a poor scholar.
